The Witch of Eye!!!

The Evil Eye and witchcraft are different beasties. There is scare-mongering and misinformation to the effect that witches who practices witchcraft with the evil eye can curse people and cause anything to drop dead for no apparent reason at all. Do you believe or not?

Flying feathers, visions of the dead, ghosts, genies, fear and foment over witchcraft and the evil eye may not be lingering superstitions from the days before to a particular people. A lot of this has to do with the environment a child has been brought up with. Faith and religion are important aspects that affect ones belief in such things or not.

With that introduction, do I believe?

I wear nine scars on my body, four on the sides of my face, and five on my stomach; I learnt that when I was one year old; the one with the ‘evil eye’ cursed me. I heard that I was dying slowly and that the doctors couldn’t figure out what the problem was. So my parents and grandma visited the one with ‘cure’ and after a series of face scarring and chants I was well again. Do I believe still? I wasn’t born with those marks.

There is a woman down this hill
Evil and beastly
Atapaa popote kukuweka majani
(She flies anywhere to bewitch you)

There is a woman down this hill
Everyone fears
Mapenzi alikwara yuko peke yake

(She refused to be loved, she lives alone)

There is a woman down this hill
Who kills children with the ‘witch of eye!’
Awatupa kaburini, wazazi hofu
(She puts them to rest, the parents are scared)

There is a woman down this hill
She causes pastors to walk with holy water
Bibilia haimtishi, aibeba mwenyewe!
(She is not scared of the Bible she carries her own)

There is a woman down this hill
<b>Karibu na makaburi
(Next to the grave site)

Walk down with caution
Kabla akutoe nduki!
(She could make you run for dear life)
